Followers of the show have been hearing me talk about the “Disneyworld of Beer”, Marty’s Liquors, for quite some time. You have heard me mention the beer manager Nate and his protege Dave on many occasions. These are two of the most knowledgeable beer ninjas I know, and they happen to be in my backyard. They know beer. They know the science of beer and they are as obsessed with trying every fine beer on the planet as I am.

Meeting Marty in person was a pleasure. He was absolutely thrilled about my mentioning his store on my appearance on Wine Library TV (yes, I plan to mention that at least 700 more times), and was delighted that I wanted to do a show in his very store. You may recall that I brainstormed with Nate and Dave about the very beers that I should bring to GaryVee. The bottom line is that not only do they know beer, they are incredibly accessible and will not judge you if you come into the store looking for a Heineken. I will say that you are doing yourself a disservice if you do not tell them what you like, what your budget and needs are and let them recommend a bottle for you. Aside from their massive selection, one beautiful thing about Marty’s is that you can split up a six pack. Yes. You can buy individual bottles.

Nate and I have been talking about this show for a while and if you know Nate, he does not like to mess around. He went to his personal cellar and the Marty’s shelves to grab bottles of some of the world’s finest sour beers for us to try. Sour beers and wild ales are complex. They’re an acquired taste and they are in many ways close to wines.

In part 1 of this episode, we review three sours:

Portland Oregon’s Raccoon Lodge and Brewpub / Cascade Brewing The Vine
Fort Collins Colorado’s New Belgium La Folie
Saignelégier, Switzerland’s BFM Brasserie Des Franches-Montagnes Abbaye De Saint Bon-Chien

Hope you enjoy part one.

Recently on the Jersey Shore, I tried Troegs Dreamweaver and their Pale Ale from their summer brews pack. One of these beers did not knock me off my seat, but the other one did. Watch to see which one and let me know what you think of Troegs in the comments. It’s amazing how different these two beers are. One is simple and elegant and I was not impressed by the simplicity. The other brought a little more sophistication to the table.
